William Saliba is closing in on his long-awaited return to competitive action as Arsenal prepare to host Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with manager Mikel Arteta facing a delicate decision over how quickly to restore the French defender to his starting line-up.
After nearly four months on the sidelines with a back injury that forced him out of action following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Saliba has returned to first-team training and is back in contention for selection.
The 25-year-old made his first matchday squad of the season during Arsenal’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Slavia Prague on Wednesday but remained an unused substitute.
Saturday’s Premier League encounter offers another opportunity for the defender to make his comeback, although Arteta is unlikely to take unnecessary risks with a player whose fitness has been carefully managed throughout his rehabilitation.
Saliba last featured during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain, when he was forced off in the first half. The back problem subsequently required an extended period of rehabilitation, ruling him out of Arsenal’s opening months of the campaign.
His return has nevertheless provided a significant boost for Arteta, who has been keen to restore one of the most influential members of his defensive unit.
Speaking ahead of the Slavia Prague encounter, the Arsenal manager confirmed that Saliba had made encouraging progress and was approaching full match fitness.
“He is in a really good place. His evolution has been as expected, which is not always the case. He feels very comfortable,” Arteta said.
The Frenchman had already completed 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly as part of his rehabilitation programme before returning to full training.
Arteta added that Saliba felt ready to play, although his involvement would depend on the team’s requirements.
The challenge for Saliba, however, is that Arsenal have managed to remain defensively impressive in his absence.
Summer signing Ezri Konsa has settled into the centre-back partnership alongside Gabriel Magalhães, helping the Gunners maintain one of the strongest defensive records in the Premier League.
Konsa was withdrawn during Wednesday’s victory in Prague after experiencing discomfort, raising questions about his availability for the Hull encounter. Arteta has since confirmed that the England international is fit, leaving the manager with several options at the heart of his defence.
Saliba’s return therefore presents Arteta with a welcome selection dilemma. While the Frenchman remains an important part of Arsenal’s defensive plans, rushing him straight into the starting line-up after such a lengthy absence could be unnecessary.
A substitute appearance would offer a more cautious route back, allowing him to regain competitive sharpness without placing excessive demands on his recovering back.
Arteta has also acknowledged the importance of giving the defender minutes, particularly with the international break approaching.
Saliba’s recovery is equally significant for Arsenal’s ambitions this season. His understanding with Gabriel has been central to the club’s defensive stability, while his composure in possession, recovery pace and ability to read danger make him one of the manager’s most trusted players.
Arsenal go into Saturday’s encounter seeking to strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League after last weekend’s impressive 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. They have won their opening four home league matches and will be keen to maintain that record against Hull.
For Saliba, however, the immediate objective is more personal: to put the frustration of his lengthy absence behind him and begin the journey towards reclaiming his place in Arsenal’s starting eleven.
The defender has already returned to the matchday squad. Whether Arteta considers Saturday the right moment to unleash him remains to be seen.
But after nearly four months away, Saliba is finally back where he wants to be — on the verge of playing football again.
