The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has refuted claims that constraints in gas supply are responsible for the current decline in electricity generation across the country.
NNPC said its gas transportation network, operated by subsidiary NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), remains available to support deliveries to power generating stations nationwide without constraints. According to the company, NGIC’s operational records do not indicate transportation-related constraints within its network that could explain the drop in generation.
The clarification was contained in a statement signed by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, in Abuja on November 6, 2026.
NNPC said it remains focused on actualising the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda, which has resulted in about 10 per cent growth in gas production volumes year-to-date in 2026. It added that gas supply availability is therefore not a challenge, stressing its commitment to supporting improved electricity generation through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation.
The clarification follows a statement by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on November 5, 2026, which attributed the lower generation to limited gas availability and reduced water inflows into hydroelectric stations.
NNPC, however, said its clarification concerns the operational status of NGIC’s transportation network. It noted that gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual power plants must be assessed separately from the availability of transportation infrastructure.
According to NNPC, a comprehensive assessment should also consider the availability and operational readiness of generating units, plant maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake. It said these factors determine whether gas supplied can be converted into electricity and should be verified alongside gas supply data to establish the causes of the shortfall.
NNPC said it supports a coordinated review of operational data by gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to identify specific constraints and guide effective interventions.
“Accurate reporting across the gas-to-power value chain is essential to resolving the challenges and sustaining public confidence,” the company said.
NNPC added that its focus remains on dependable energy infrastructure and constructive collaboration to translate Nigeria’s gas resources into more reliable electricity for Nigerians.
