The assistant inspector-general in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the 2023 general elections, AIG Aishatu Abubakar, has warned police officers deployed for the elections against partisanship and charged them to be professional in their duties.

Abubakar stated this while officially deploying the over 17,000 officers deployed for the elections in Abuja yesterday.

Addressing the officers, the AIG called on police personnel and other security agencies to show responsibility and ensure the electoral process is secure, safe and credible.

She urged police personnel to protect lives and property, and ensure that all citizens conduct their civil rights without fear and intimidation.

She said; “Be mindful of the vulnerable and people living with disabilities in the discharge of your duty.”

The AIG also urged the personnel to read and digest the “Revised Standard Operational Guidelines and Rules for Police Officers and Other Law Enforcement Agents on Election Security Duties,” stating that the handbook is a valuable operational companion that could act as a standard in holding them accountable in the line of their electoral duties, as all hands must be on deck to actualise the mandate and commitment of the force to have free, fair and credible elections.

Earlier, the commissioner of police in the FCT, Sadiq Abubakar, said; “The police and, of course other security agencies that are supporting agencies are fully ready for the conduct of the elections.”

The commissioner said all allowances of  officers were available and they would receive them.
