Youths in Rivers State under the auspices of Rivers State Youth Leaders Coalition (RSYLC) have raised the alarm over alleged attempt to assassinate the president of Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF), Legborsi Yamaabana, by some thugs dressed in police uniform.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, spokesman of RSYLC, Tamunobelema Tamunoimama, said the attempted assassination of Yamaabana was a matter of grave concern especially during this time of political crises in the state.
Tamunoimama urged the police in Rivers State to expedite action in unraveling the hired killers and their sponsors.
He said, “The attempt to kill Legborsi cannot, truthfully speaking, be pardoned on the score of manners, nor justified on that of law. The report on the assassination attempt on the life of Legborsi is a matter of grave concern because it occurs at a time the state is facing destabilising crisis and threat to its peaceful co-existence.
“The Rivers State Youth Leaders Coalition, an amalgamation of all indigenous youth leaders and youth groups in Rivers State, totally condemns in its entirety, the assassination attempt made on the life of our leader.
“Given the volatile nature of our dear state and the spate of killing recently, there is need to act promptly to investigate this matter, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
“We therefore call on the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command to quickly swing into action by dispatching his men to fetch out those involved in this act on the life of our leader. We believe that nobody is above the law, no matter how highly place and connected.
“We also confidently believe that the Nigerian Police is up to the task particularly, in considerations of their roles in stemming crime to the barest minimum in the state for the past years.”
Also, the president of Ogoni Youth Federation, Legborsi Yamaabana, who narrated his ordeal, said the incident happened around GRA on the 23rd of February 2023.
Yamaabana explained that the hired killers were dressed in Nigeria Police Force uniform with the inscription ‘Special Forces’ driving a Toyota Camry vehicle and fully armed with AK-47 rifles said to be men on election duty, who also made away with his mobile phones, car and other valuables.
