Nigerian Centre for Climate Renewal Resilience and Adaptation (NICCRRA) in partnership with Agro Preciso Limited and other firms and agencies have commenced tree planting in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to mitigate the effect of climate change.
Targeting the planting of 70 trees daily, the debut of the project was held at the Asokoro Primary and Secondary School in Abuja yesterday.
Speaking during the occasion, the programme officer of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Hamza Gomina, hailed the organisers for the tree planting exercise.
Hamza said a lot of people do not understand the importance of tree planting. He said tree planting leads to cleaner air, stabilised soil and that it will reduce the effect of climate change.
He said the children, youths, and the old need to understand the importance of trees.
The managing director of Agro Preciso, Engr Lawal Nurudeen, in his remarks lauded the organisers and emphasised the need for tree planting as a way of mitigating climate change.
“For us who are in the agricultural sector, we are the worst hit by climate change.
“During the flooding last year, farmers suffered a great deal. We particularly, lost a lot of crops as a result of the floods in Kogi State to be precise,” he said.
Lawal stated that the plan was to plant 70 trees daily and called on the federal government to include tree planting in the constitution.
