The Director-General of the Governor Agbu Kefas Re-election Campaign Council, Hon. Danladi Baido, has warned supporters of the governor against thuggery, cyberbullying and other forms of violence as governorship campaign activities resume in Taraba State.
Baido, in a statement signed by the council’s Director of Media and Publicity/Spokesman, Emmanuel Bello, urged members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct issue-based campaigns and maintain decorum throughout the electioneering period.
He stressed that, political campaigns should not be treated as warfare, as all political actors are urged to respect the rights of opponents to campaign peacefully.
He also warned supporters against taking the law into their hands when provoked, noting that the state government had already outlawed pre- and post-election violence.
Baido specifically drew attention to the governor’s anti-thuggery Executive Order, saying its provisions covered not only physical violence but also cyberbullying.
He cautioned social media users against name-calling, false accusations, insults, malinformation and false alarms, stressing that freedom of expression came with corresponding responsibility.
He urged both young and older campaigners to exercise restraint in their social media activities, warning that relevant laws would be enforced throughout the campaign period.
The campaign council DG also called on APC supporters to focus their campaign messages on issues and the achievements of the Kefas administration, rather than personal attacks.
He assured that, efforts were being made to ensure a peaceful campaign environment for all.
Baido further appealed to media practitioners to uphold fairness and balance in their reportage, assuring that the campaign council would work closely with the media as partners in promoting peaceful and credible campaigns.
