Tomorrow’s Women Development Organisation (TWDO) in collaboration with Citizens of Heaven International Leadership Empowerment Welfare Trust, has organised a community development program for women, sensitising them on water and sanitation in Abuja at the weekend.
The founder of TWDO, Chinyere Ezenwokike, in her address said water and sanitation extend to daily life and improves hygiene and general well-being of the community.
She pointed out that the theme of the program; “Water and Sanitation as the core agent of sustainable development” was apt, as improved water quality by reduction of pollution, elimination of dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, in addition to halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally can help development.
Also speaking, programs manager, Citizens of Heaven International Leadership Empowerment, Bridget Nkiru Udegbunam emphasised the need for sanitation as it refers to public health, just as she noted that preventing human contact with faeces is part of sanitation, as is hand washing with soap.
She said predominantly, proper sanitation ought to be maintained at the personal and public levels by simple steps such as cleanly washing oneself, especially hands and nose frequently, and disposing of wastes such as medical waste meticulously and with care to maintain a healthy environment.
On her part, Mrs chinyere Doris umezinwa, representative at Legal Aid Council, stated that safe water sanitation and hygiene for women can reduce the risk of infections, death of infants, mothers, and members of their household by 25 percent.
