The All Abuja Residents Association (ÀARA) has blamed the worsening socio-economic hardship in the country on poor governance and the alleged mismanagement of public funds by some elected officials at various levels of government.
The association’s National President, Igwekala Ugomaduefule, said many Nigerians were living in poverty and deplorable conditions despite the substantial monthly allocations accruing to state governments from the Federation Account.
Ugomaduefule spoke on Thursday at a press conference to announce the association’s end-of-year meeting and award ceremony scheduled for December.
He lamented that some states had recorded little visible development despite the funds available to their governments, accusing some governors of failing to use public resources to improve the living conditions of their constituents.
He described the situation as unfortunate, arguing that elected officials should be held accountable for how they manage public funds entrusted to them.
“Some governors are not supposed to be there because it is a shame and very painful to be collecting monthly allocation without being able to justify it,” he said.
The AARA president urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability and transparency from elected leaders at all levels of government, stressing the need for public officeholders to demonstrate the impact of government revenue through improved infrastructure and better living conditions.
