Katsina State government has debunked reports claiming that Abdussalam Rabiu, the winner of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition and a final-year medical student, was killed by his abductors.
A statement by the commissioner for information and culture, Bala Zango, clarified that Rabiu, along with his father and brother, who were abducted by bandits, are still alive.
The statement also revealed that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N30 million for their release.
He added that the Katsina State governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, described the kidnapping as unfortunate, expressing his sympathy for the victims and their families.
“My heart is with the victims, their family, relatives and friends, and we pray they safely regain freedom,” the governor said.
Governor Radda assured that concrete actions were being taken to ensure the safe rescue of Rabiu and his family, urging security agencies to intensify efforts in securing their release.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity in the state and combating all forms of crime.
The governor also called on the public to pray fervently for the safe return of Rabiu and all other victims of the abduction.
Rabiu was abducted after he was honoured by the Katsina State government for his outstanding performance at the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Kebbi State.
The incident happened while he was returning to Faskari with his family after receiving his awards.
The Katsina State government appreciated the concern shown by the Kebbi State government regarding the incident.
