Delta State Police Command has engaged heads of public and private schools as part of its renewed efforts to protect students and school facilities.
A total of 62 school heads and teachers attended the meeting, which focused on enhancing school safety against the backdrop of recent cases of student abductions reported in parts of the country.
The security meeting, held yesterday, followed directives from the commissioner of police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.
The engagement was led by the deputy commissioner of police (Operations), DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and featured the coordinator of the Safe School Initiative in Delta State, ACP George Efeizomor and key education stakeholders.
The discussions centred on practical security measures including the fencing of school premises, installation of surveillance cameras, engagement of local vigilante groups, and improved collaboration between schools and security agencies.
Emerging challenges such as parental interference in school security arrangements and the misuse of mobile phones by students during school hours were also highlighted.
Addressing participants, ACP Efeizomor assured school administrators of sustained police support and urged them to maintain direct communication with their respective Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Area Commanders.
He also shared emergency control room numbers to ensure prompt reporting and rapid response to security threats.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, CP Abaniwonda, through DCP Adejobi, disclosed that adequate security deployments, intelligence-led patrols, and rapid response mechanisms have been activated across Delta State, particularly around schools during the Ember Months.
The Delta State Police Command described the state as relatively peaceful and called on school administrators, parents, and community stakeholders to continue supporting security efforts aimed at protecting students, teachers, and school infrastructure.
The meeting forms part of the Command’s broader Safe School Initiative, designed to ensure that learning environments across Delta State remain secure and conducive for academic activities.
