Abia Bans Manual Sewage Evacuation After 2 Workers Die In Aba

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has banned the manual evacuation of sewage across the state following the deaths of two sewage evacuators in Aba.

The Deputy General Manager (DGM), Aba Zone of ASEPA, Okezie Ezengwa, announced the ban while briefing journalists in Aba on the incident.

Ezengwa described manual sewage evacuation as illegal, unhealthy and a serious environmental risk to both residents and sewage evacuators, warning that the practice could trigger an epidemic.

He cautioned residents against channeling septic tank contents into drainage systems and indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the Aba axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The DGM warned that defaulters would be prosecuted in accordance with the state’s environmental laws, urging residents to desist from practices capable of endangering public health and degrading the environment.

He also called on residents and business premises owners to obtain waste buckets from approved vendors to promote proper waste management and ensure a cleaner environment.

While sympathising with the families of the two victims, Ezengwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improving environmental conditions across the state and enforcing measures aimed at protecting public health.
