Following the recent surge in cultism across Abia State, the state government has directed the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the suspects immediately.
The information commissioner, Okey Kanu, stated this at a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Umuahia, the state capital.
Kanu, who said Governor Alex Otti chaired the meeting, reiterated the government’s stand against crime and antisocial activities in the state.
He said, “The state government has observed with dismay the growing incidence of cult activities in the state.
”As a responsible government, this administration will make no effort to ensure that the state is rid of criminal activities.”
Kanu also announced Otti’s $5,000 support for Grace Nkpa, a 15-year-old girl from the state who won a TechGirls 2025 contest to represent the state in the US.
He said the government had begun paying Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba staff members who were disengaged between 2018 and 2022 by the previous administration their owed salaries.
”So far, 249 of such staff have been paid” he noted as the government was also making impacts at Abia State College of Education Technical (ASCETA ), Arochukwu.
He added: “Other projects such as the college library, school of vocational education block, college auditorium, students’ hostels, and school of technical education are all progressing very well.”
