Abia State government has launched a statewide tax enumeration and automation exercise aimed at capturing data on houses, businesses and the residents.

The commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu stated this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the state capital.

He said the initiative was to boost internal revenue generation, ensure fairness in taxation and improve access to social services across the state.

He also said the administration had recorded significant progress in infrastructure, urban renewal, education, healthcare, economic empowerment, among others

“Our ambition for 2025 is even greater than what we have achieved so far; to meet the rising needs of the residents and deliver fully on the promises of this new era. We are confident that with the support of our people, we will meet and even surpass our N120 billion internally generated revenue target by the year-end,” the commissioner said.

Contributing, his counterpart in the Ministry of Finance, Uwaoma Ukandu, noted the support that residents have given to the administration and assured of its commitment to transparency and continued development.

“The visible progress we’ve made requires sustainable funding. With Ndi Abia’s continued cooperation, we are optimistic about achieving our ambitious targets,” he stated.

Similarly, the chairman of the State Internal Revenue Services, Udochukwu Ogbonna, said the exercise is crucial not only for revenue boosting but also for enhancing security in the state.
