Abia Govt To Renew Covenant With God In Thanksgiving Service

Abia State government has concluded plans to hold a solemn assembly and covenant renewal service on September 24 as part of activities to thank God for His faithfulness to the state and to rededicate the state to Him.

The commissioner for information, Okey Kanu stated this at joint press conference held with his counterpart from the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs ministry and coordinator of the programme, Uzor Nwachukwu in Umuahia yesterday.

Kanu explained that the initiative was borne out of the Alex Otti-led administration’s belief in seeking God’s guidance and committing the affairs of the state into God’s hands.

He said the state had remained under God’s hand before, during and after the 2023 election, noting that the administration considers it appropriate to return to Him in thanksgiving and prayer as the state approaches the 2027 elections.

”Now that an election is approaching, we believe it’s only fitting to seek God’s face once more and to rededicate the state into God’s hands, to ensure that the peace and prosperity we’ve always enjoyed over these past three years will continue,” he said.

‎‎Nwachukwu said the theme of the event is “Remembering the Covenant.”

‎‎He announced that the programme would begin with a three-day fasting from September 21 to 23, during which churches across the state would observe fasting and prayers in their respective locations.
‎‎He said the fast would be followed by thanksgiving services at Seventh -Day Adventist Churches on Saturday, September 26, while other churches would observe theirs on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

‎‎He explained that the programme is designed to acknowledge God’s faithfulness, offer thanksgiving and seek His continued guidance, peace and prosperity for the state as it enters another election season.

‎Nwachukwu recalled the passed dark years in Abia history, including periods of insecurity, bad governance and underdevelopment, and said that the people had persistently cried out to God for deliverance

‎He said prominent Christian ministers have been invited to lead in the activities of the solemn assembly, including Rev. Dr. Sam Oye, who will minister the Word, and Prophet Isa El-buba, who will lead intercessory prayers for the state.
