Abia State House of Assembly member, Hon. Erondu Uchenna Erondu, has lauded the House of Representatives for backing the Assembly’s resolution on the suspension of the planned increase in electricity tariff in the country.

Erondu spoke to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Umuahia, the state capital while reacting to the call by the House of Representatives on the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission to suspend the plan.

The call followed a resolution on a motion moved by the deputy minority whip of the House, Aliyu Madaki, who had expressed concern over the suspense created by the plan by the distribution companies.

The representative of Obingwa West had on June 29, during plenary moved a motion on the floor of the House on matter of urgent public importance, calling for the suspension of the plan.

He had decried the negative impacts the increase would have on the people, pointing out that the hardship brought upon them by the removal of fuel subsidy without any palliatives was still shocking.

Following the motion, the House resolved to appeal to the federal government to suspend the increase scheduled to commence on July 1, 2023 until the effect of the subsidy removal was properly absorbed.

The 8th Assembly, presided over by the speaker, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, therefore, appealed to “our colleagues at the National Assembly to intervene and pass a similar resolution.

“Request the Nigerian Labour Congress to include the Nigerian masses’ interest in all their negotiations with the federal government on the subsidy removal.”
