The outgoing zonal coordinator of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) Abuja Zone, Dr Abubakar Danraka, has revealed that the zone has achieved notable successes in promoting research and publication among its members.
Danraka, who spoke during the inauguration of the new executive committee of the zone over the weekend, disclosed that the zone had conducted two surveys and published the results in peer-reviewed journals worldwide, a feat that had not been achieved before his tenure.
“We introduced rapid capacity building to sharpen the skills of fellows to become very competent in writing academic works and publishing,” he said.
He noted that the zone’s efforts had led to a significant increase in research and publication among its members.
Danraka disclosed that during his tenure, he had focused on four key areas.
“I focused on four key areas: building on enduring legacies, leveraging membership and competencies to improve efficiency, impacting patient safety and public enlightenment, and uplifting the noble objectives of our association,” Danraka said.
He also disclosed that his tenure saw the appointment of over 60 pharmacists as consultants in eight government agencies in the FCT, a significant milestone considering there were no consultant pharmacists appointed before his tenure.
The outgoing zonal coordinator expressed confidence that his successor, Dr. Muftau Tijjani, would build on the momentum, saying, “I think he stands a better chance to perform more because we have laid the foundations as much as possible and we have raised the awareness.”
Tijjani, the new Zonal Coordinator, also outlined his vision for the FCT Abuja Zone while speaking with journalists. This vision includes maintaining and improving the quality of care at a top-notch level through a collaborative approach and collaboration with other healthcare professionals on a daily basis.
The new Zonal Coordinator listed training and retraining, empowerment, and membership drives as his key areas of focus, emphasising the importance of keeping pharmacists updated with the latest developments in healthcare delivery.
He also emphasised the importance of specialisation in the field of pharmacy, saying, “The benefit of this college to pharmacists in Nigeria is that we are in the era of specialisation because that is what can ensure the needed care to the needy.”
Other new members of the executives include Pharm. Zaynab Galadima as Zonal Deputy Coordinator, Pharm. Ngozi Obute as Zonal Secretary, and Pharm. Isah Hayatu Galadima as Zonal Treasurer.
