Residents of Ushafa, in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have urged the Federal government to prioritise the security and welfare of its citizens, especially those residing in remote areas.

The Chairman of the Pmagbe Community Landlord Association, Ushafa, Hon. Emeka Ohaeri, made the call at the weekend during the inauguration and handing over of a security outpost built by the community to the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).

Hon Ohaeri, who decried the security challenges being faced by the community over the years, said the community initiated the security outpost project to address the security challenges of the area.
He expressed the hope that the presence of the VGN security outpost would reduce kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.
“It is with great pride and gratitude that I welcome you all to this historic occasion: the commissioning of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria Security Outpost in our dear Pmagbe community.

For years, our community has faced serious security challenges—ranging from kidnappings to burglaries—often perpetrated by criminal elements exploiting the dam’s terrain to infiltrate our neighbourhood. These unfortunate incidents have not only threatened the peace of our residents but also compromised the safety of the dam that provides potable water to the entire Federal Capital Territory.

In the face of these threats, the men of Pmagbe Security Outfit, the Nigerian Police Force IG squad, and the Nigerian Army have worked tirelessly to keep us safe. On behalf of the entire community, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for their commitment and service, often rendered under challenging conditions.

“However, recognising that security is a shared responsibility, the Pmagbe community, in collaboration with the FCT Water Board, resolved to take a proactive step by constructing this security outpost. This initiative, made possible through the generous contributions of our residents, partners, and supporters, stands as a testament to what unity and collective will can achieve.

Today, we proudly hand over this facility to the Vigilante Group of Nigeria. We are confident that, in partnership with the Nigerian Police Force, the Army, the JTF, and the Forest Guards, this outpost will significantly strengthen our community’s security architecture. I urge all involved to approach this task with dedication, vigilance, and a deep sense of responsibility to the lives and properties you have sworn to protect”

Speaking while inaugurating the security outpost, a member representing Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, / Bwari Area Council, Hon Chinedu Obika praised the community for initiating the project, saying that “if we want good security, we should be able to fund it”.

The lawmaker advocated for a percentage of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) internally generated revenue to be set aside to secure the residents.

Hon Obika said, “If we want good security, we must be able to fund it. FCT has the capacity to fund security; we should not leave it to the Federal government. We must allocate a percentage of the FCT’s internally generated revenue to secure our personnel and build additional police stations, patrol vehicles, dormitories, and CCTV systems. We are doing our best to nip insecurity in the bud.

“Let FCT be used as a pilot state for community policing. I am pleased to be here today to commission this security outpost. I also asked the community not to be tired, because you are helping yourselves. I thank the community for initiating it and carrying it out”
