Abuja’s Public Schools Close Amid Labour Strike

Public primary and secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have shut their doors, sending thousands of pupils and students home as a result of the ongoing strike by the Organised Labour on Monday.

The action comes as part of a broader labour strike action organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to press home thier demand for a new minimum wage.

LEADERSHIP observed that the usual morning routine in Abuja was disrupted on Monday as public schools closed doors against students.

In Lugbe, Abuja pupils attending Primary Schools were seen returning home as early as 10am.

Also, it was gathered that students of the Government Secondary School and Junior Secondary School in Kubwa have also been asked to return home until further notice, as a result of the ongoing strike action.

Some students in senior secondary schools, who spoke with our correspondent, said they were told to go home until they were recalled or the strike was ended.

Our correspondent further gathered that primary and secondary school students who arrived at school early in the morning were turned away due to the ongoing strike.

One of the students identified as Hassan, who was met coming home around 10:25 am said; “I went to school as early as 7.30am but was compelled to return home by the few teachers I met in the schools.”
