The apex northern sociocultural group, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed concern over the recent demolition of the Alaba Rago Market in Lagos State.

ACF described the demolition as a significant disruption to livelihoods and economic activity in the area.

In a statement on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor T. A. Muhammad-Baba, the group said it received news of the demolition with “great concern,” noting the market’s historical relevance as a major hub for livestock trade in Lagos.

“The demolition of the historic market has resulted in the loss of businesses and property, disrupting the means of livelihood for your thousands of people. Mercifully, no loss of lives has been reported,” the ACF stated.

The organisation commiserated with those affected by the demolition, expressing hope that the resilience for which the people were known would help them to recover from the losses incurred.

The Forum also disclosed that it has commenced efforts to gather comprehensive details surrounding the demolition, including the circumstances that led to the demolition and the extent of its impact.

It said the findings would inform future engagement with both the affected community and the Lagos State Government towards a “satisfactory resolution.”

While calling on the Lagos State and Federal Governments to provide relief and support to the victims, the ACF urged those affected, and their sympathisers, to remain calm and law-abiding.

“Alaba Rago has been a historic landmark in Lagos, and ACF believes it will remain so. In the fullness of time, the market will roar back to life more vibrant and prosperous,” the statement added.

The demolition, which reportedly affected a large section of the market, has sparked reactions from traders and civil society groups, prompting calls for government intervention and transparency over the circumstances that led to the exercise.
