Renowned activist, Yusuf Bakare, has called on youths to reject social vices such as drug abuse, cybercrime and homosexuality, and focus on building a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Ramadan Lecture held in Ibadan on Tuesday, Bakare highlighted the dangers of these vices and negative behaviors like homosexuality, that have become prevalent among young Nigerians.
Particularly condemning homosexuality as an immoral act, he said such practice is both against Islamic and Christian belief. He cited various verses from the Holy Book to support his argument, and emphasized the importance of upholding traditional and religious values and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
He recalled the embarrassment faced by his family as a consequence of his cousin, Opeyemi Bakare’s actions. He regretted that Opeyemi’s engagement in homosexual acts has alienated him from the family, and forced him to flee from the wrath of the law.
The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill was signed into law in 2014, by former President Goodluck Jonathan. The law imposes a 14-year prison sentence on anyone who enters into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union.
“Engaging in such acts ultimately destroy lives and futures. It is time to rise above negative influences and channel your energy into productive ventures,” Bakare said.
He commended President Bola Tinubu on the launch of the Nigerian Youth Academy which will train youths on digital literacy, technical skills, etc., urging state governors and community leaders to collaborate to replicate such initiative in communities.
Bakare urged youths to take advantage of the initiative to make positive choices and strive to become responsible members of society. “Your dreams are valid, stay focused, surround yourselves with positive influences and embrace true traditional and religious teachings,” he added.
