Adamawa Attack: Death Toll Rises To 14, Assembly Seeks More Troops

The death toll from insurgent’ attacks on three communities of Zah, Mubang Yadul and Kiking in Hong local government srea of Adamawa State has risen to 14.

In a reaction to the attacks, the state House of Assembly urged Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to collaborate with the federal government to deploy additional military personnel, equipment,and surveillance assets to Hong, particularly in the communities sharing borders with the Sambisa Forest.
The lawmakers Presided over seating by the speaker, Bathiya Wesley, urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to dig a trench at communities sharing borders with Sambisa forest to curtail easy access of the insurgents into communities.

The assembly called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), the NEDC, and other relevant humanitarian agencies to intervene with relief materials, including food, medical supplies, clothing, and psychosocial support, to the victims.

The assembly further urged the state government to collaborate with the FG and other relevant agencies and partners, to increase temporary shelters at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps within Hong town to accommodate the displaced persons.

It urged the NEDC to ensure the prompt reconstruction and rehabilitation of public infrastructure destroyed, including schools, health facilities, and other government properties.
The legislators mandated its committee on security to visit the affected communities and commiserate with the victims, as well as assess the level of destruction.

The resolutions adopted by the assembly followed a matter of urgent public importance sponsored by the Member representing Uba/Gaya constituency, Hon. Eng. Adum John Alaba, at the resumed plenary.

Hon. Eng Alaba lamented that villages of Mubang and Zah were attacked repeatedly, with the most recent attack occurring Monday evening, saying the recent attack marked the third time the insurgents invaded Zah village.

The Lawmaker told the assembly that during the attacks, households, public schools, and health centres were destroyed while many innocent citizens lost their lives.

He further lamented that the public facilities destroyed in Zah village were renovated barely two weeks ago by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, thereby compounding the loss and frustration of the affected communities.

He narrated that on 25th December, 2025, the insurgents attempted to attack Garaha Main town, but were repelled by the military and that on the 26th December, Mayo-Lade village in Gaya District of Hong LGA was attacked, resulting in the death of several persons and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

He said, “These attacks are occurring essentially because the affected communities share borders with the Sambisa axis of Borno State, making them vulnerable to infiltration by insurgent elements.

“The persistent insecurity has led to mass displacement, humanitarian crisis, disruption of education and healthcare services, and growing fear among law-abiding citizens.

According to him, the recent attack claimed 14 lives while property, including houses and public facilities, was destroyed at Mubang and Zah communities, respectively.

He told his colleagues that the matter is urgent, grave, and of serious public concern, requiring immediate intervention to safeguard lives, restore public confidence, and prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.

He observed that the current military presence is inadequate to effectively secure the vast and challenging terrain, saying that the affected communities are exposed to continuous attacks.

He stated that if urgent steps are not taken, the situation may escalate further, leading to more loss of lives and property.

He sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives and all his constituents over the attack and assured them of Governor Fintiri’s effort to ensure security around their communities and the state in general.

Commenting on the motion, the Member representing Yola South constituency, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Mijinyawa pleaded with the government to intervene to protect lives and property.

Also speaking, the Majority Leader, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, described the attack as pathetic and unfortunate, saying that the victims were supposed to be celebrating. Still, they were thrown into a state of mourning.

On their part, Hon. Sunday Peter (Guyuk) and Hon. Musa Kallamu (Mayo Belwa) commiserated with the victims. They called on NASS members to urge the FG to curtail the attacks on innocent citizens.

Speaking while presiding over the sitting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley described the situation as unfortunate and worrisome, saying that the matter is of grave concern and needs immediate intervention from the government.
