Adamawa Governorship Aspirant Resigns From APC

A governorship aspirant in Adamawa State, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing a press conference, Vunobolki said the party is heading for doom if urgent steps are not taken to restore internal democracy and fairness.

A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, who joined the APC in February 2026 with his supporters across the 21 local government areas of the state, Vunobolki said his decision to quit the party was informed by clear signs of manipulation and imposition within the party structure.

Vunobolki accused party leaders and government-backed interests of hijacking the ongoing congress, alleging that frameworks were deliberately designed to favour certain aspirants.

He alleged that some individuals used citizens’ National Identification Numbers without consent to inflate membership figures in parts of the state, particularly in Yola North, raising concerns about the credibility of the process.

According to him, these developments reflect a dangerous pattern that could cost the APC dearly in future elections.

He recalled a similar incident in 2019, when he bought nomination forms to contest for the Adamawa South Senatorial seat but was sidelined following the imposition of candidates—a move he said ultimately led to the party’s defeat at the polls.

Vunobolki also referenced earlier assurances by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri that all aspirants would be given a level playing field.

However, he noted that current realities suggest a complete departure from those promises.

Consequently, Vunobolki announced his immediate resignation from the APC, effective April 13, 2026, after consultations with his political allies.

He called on his supporters across the state to withdraw from the party, pending further directives on a new political direction.

The development is seen by observers as a major blow to the APC in Adamawa, raising fresh concerns about internal divisions and the party’s preparedness for future elections.

Vunobolki warned that political power cannot be sustained through imposition, stressing that history has shown that ruling-party status does not guarantee electoral victory when justice and fairness are compromised.
