The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses, despite ongoing national-level litigations that have triggered protests in parts of the country.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the State Chairman, Leader Sampson, said the move aligns with directives from the party’s national leadership under David Mark.
He stressed that the Rivers chapter remains cohesive and free of internal divisions, adding that all structures are fully mobilized for the exercise.
“We are acting on the directive of our national leadership, and we have the mandate to proceed with our congresses,” he said.
Party officials from across the state’s local government areas convened at the secretariat for final preparations ahead of the exercise, which will span over six thousand units.
The chairman noted that all legal and procedural requirements have been met, including timely notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Dismissing concerns over the litigations, he maintained that the party’s actions are lawful.
“There is no division within the ADC in Rivers State; we remain united at all levels—we are all united under the leadership of Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Senator David Mark,” he stated.
Addressing the party’s absence in the recent bye-election in the state, Sampson accused INEC of deliberately excluding the ADC from the process.
“That was a deliberate attempt by INEC to exclude us from the democratic process,” he said.
He further alleged interference by the electoral body in the party’s internal affairs, warning of broader implications for Nigeria’s democracy.
“We cannot allow INEC to undermine or disrupt democracy in Nigeria,” he stated.
The ADC also criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of attempting to weaken opposition parties.
“The ADC remains a credible alternative, and we are committed to strengthening our structure across Rivers State,” he added.
Party leaders from various local government areas have expressed readiness for the congresses, assuring members of a peaceful and credible process.
The ward and local government congresses are set for April 9, while the state congress will follow on April 11.
