As Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence, Accord has urged the government and the military to intensify effort in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence that threaten the country’s progress.
The party stated this in its congratulatory message to Nigerians on the Independence Day celebration, while urging them to reflect on the nation’s democratic sojourn.
In a press statement released yesterday by the party’s national chairman, Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, the party underscored the resilience and strength of Nigerians in the face of numerous challenges over the decades.
“At 65, Nigeria has come a long way,” the statement read, acknowledging the country’s tumultuous past, including political instability, military interventions, civil war, economic recessions, and ongoing security concerns. Despite these obstacles, the statement highlighted the unwavering spirit of the Nigerian people, emphasizing their commitment to building a prosperous, democratic nation.
In line with the occasion, Accord called on all citizens to embody the spirit of unity and tolerance expressed in the national anthem, “Though tribe and tongue may differ, In Brotherhood, we stand.” The party urged Nigerians to come together in “one accord” to continue nurturing the democratic ideals that were restored with independence.
Accord also reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a better, more just society. “Our vision remains clear: A Nigeria where no man or woman is oppressed, where democracy thrives, and where future generations inherit a banner untainted by corruption or injustice,” the statement said.
In the spirit of strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, Accord called on all levels of government to prioritise the security and welfare of citizens, in line with Section 14(2)b of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
“National security, safety, and order are critical for sustainable democracy and development,” the statement stressed, advocating for continued vigilance and action to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all Nigerians.
Furthermore, Accord encouraged all Nigerians to actively participate in the ongoing voter registration process, emphasizing that “Your vote is your voice” and a powerful tool in electing leaders who will drive the country toward greater prosperity and inclusivity. The party is actively mobilizing citizens nationwide to ensure robust participation in the upcoming elections.
Turning its focus to the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State, the party expressed confidence in its candidate, Chief Chidi Charles Onyeze, who it described as a “competent, resourceful, visionary, and credible leader.” Accord called on the people of Anambra to cast their votes for progress, stability, and good governance, asserting that the state deserved a government that would prioritize unity, security, and development.
The party also sent a strong message against electoral malpractice, declaring its commitment to resisting any attempt to subvert the will of the people. “We must uphold the sanctity of the ballot box,” the statement emphasized, urging citizens to reject vote-buying and embrace the power of their votes in determining the future of Anambra State.
