Hon Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North/South federal constituency of Abia State has urged the federal government to address the masses’ demands.
Ikwechegh also suggested that the federal government should cut down on its excesses. While preparing the budget, it should be scrutinized by consultants before being presented to the National Assembly, allowing at least a month for thorough examination.
The lawmaker emphasised that the legislative arm of government should remain independent, as should the judiciary and the executive branches.
In a statement yesterday, Mascot pointed out the inconsistency of leaders riding in luxurious convoys—governors with 15 cars, the President with 50 cars—while expecting the people to tighten their belts.
According to him, the government should truly lead by example. He noted a pervasive tendency towards wastefulness and a total lack of frugality in the daily running of government affairs.
He stressed the need for the government to focus on growing the economy, improving agricultural production, and addressing insecurity to enable farmers to work without fear of attacks by herdsmen.
Additionally, he said the government should monitor gold mining activities in Zamfara State and work towards generating a steady electricity supply. He asserted that Nigeria is a great nation and that political will is necessary to achieve its potential.
He also mentioned that while the President has spoken strongly about delegating responsibilities, it is crucial to ensure these delegations are executed effectively.
“For example, the issue of the billions allegedly stolen by the minister in charge of humanitarian affairs, money meant to support the destitute and struggling individuals,” he remarked.
