The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has received widespread commendation following the successful staging of its Commonwealth Games Trials, with stakeholders hailing the improved organisation, efficiency and professionalism displayed throughout the competition.
The trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, were completed on schedule, marking a significant improvement on previous editions that were hampered by delays and unfinished events.
In a statement issued by AFN Media Committee Chairman Maxwell Kumoye, leading athletics platform Athletics Station praised the seamless coordination that ensured all events were concluded before nightfall, allowing athletes and officials to leave the venue on time.
According to Athletics Station, the competition demonstrated what could be achieved through effective planning, strong leadership and collective commitment from all departments involved.
Special recognition was given to AFN Second Vice-President Akuchukwu Aghazu, General Omatseye Nesiama, Yusuf Alli, Chief Mary Onyali, Gabriel Opuana, Roasters Athletics and the Call Room officials for their roles in delivering a successful championship.
General Nesiama drew particular praise for his organisational expertise and ability to keep the programme running according to schedule.
Athletics Station also highlighted the contribution of Yusuf Alli, head of the Elite Podium Finish Committee, commending his analytical approach and attention to detail in assessing athletes’ performances.
The leadership of the National Sports Commission, headed by Director-General Bukola Olopade, alongside Nigeria Olympic Committee Vice-President Chief Solomon Ogba and AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa, were also acknowledged for providing crucial support.
Additional commendation went to Aghazu, Onyali, Kunle Oguneye, Gbolahan Fatuga and other stakeholders who offered financial rewards to outstanding home-based athletes, providing extra motivation during the trials.
Observers described the successful conclusion of all events as a positive sign for Nigerian athletics as preparations continue for major international competitions.
“This is progress and professionalism,” Athletics Station noted, applauding everyone who contributed to making the Commonwealth Games Trials one of the federation’s most efficiently organised championships in recent years.
