African Energies Summit Boycott Deepens As AEC Demands Real Inclusion

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has reaffirmed its boycott of the Africa Energies Summit in London, insisting it will not reconsider its stance until organisers implement concrete reforms around local content, representation and hiring practices.

The Chamber said the dispute has evolved beyond participation in a single event, reflecting deeper concerns about credibility within Africa’s energy ecosystem—particularly whether platforms centred on African resources can remain legitimate while Africans, especially Black Africans, are underrepresented in leadership roles.

According to the AEC, repeated engagements with organisers have failed to deliver meaningful change, shifting the issue from dialogue to accountability. The group argued that local content must move beyond rhetoric and become a measurable commitment embedded in governance and executive structures.

“Our position remains the same: if you benefit from Africa’s resources and its development agenda, then you must reflect Africa in your leadership, hiring and decision-making. Local content can no longer be smoke and mirrors—it must be a tangible commitment,” said NJ Ayuk.

The Chamber stressed that representation is not merely symbolic but central to legitimacy in an industry where conferences influence investment flows, policy direction and strategic alliances.

The boycott has gathered momentum following withdrawals by key stakeholders. Mozambique’s oil and gas sector pulled out in March 2026, while Ghana followed in April, both citing concerns over local content gaps and alleged discriminatory hiring practices. These exits signal a widening industry backlash rather than an isolated dispute.

The AEC has tied the standoff to a broader push for African control over energy resources. Speaking at ARDA Week 2026, Ayuk reiterated his “refine, baby refine” message, advocating expanded domestic refining capacity, stronger infrastructure and support for indigenous firms.

He pointed to the Dangote Refinery and Sahara Group as examples of African-led investments capable of reducing energy poverty and retaining value within the continent.

The same themes emerged at the Namibia International Energy Conference, where discussions centred on local content, gender inclusion and leveraging oil discoveries for broader economic development.

Ayuk also warned that the campaign could escalate to target companies backing the summit, signalling a more aggressive phase in the dispute.

“It will be incredibly dangerous to have the vision of Daniel Davidson and Frontier Energy Network guide how the continent addresses energy poverty and investment,” he said, adding that firms supporting what the Chamber describes as “anti-African policies” could face coordinated pushback.

The AEC maintains that its position is not exclusionary but aimed at enforcing minimum standards of fairness, representation and respect across Africa-focused industry platforms.

Until visible reforms are implemented, the Chamber insists, the boycott will remain in force.
