African Gas Industry Confronts Investment, Infrastructure Challenges

Africa’s gas industry is facing critical investment and infrastructure decisions as governments and energy companies seek to expand gas development while increasing its contribution to industrialisation and broader economic growth.

The issues will form part of the discussions at the three-day Africa Gas & LNG Summit 2026 (AfGLNG 2026), scheduled to hold in Maputo, Mozambique, from November 11 to 13.

The summit will bring together government officials, energy executives, investors and industry experts to examine the next phase of Africa’s gas and liquefied natural gas development.

Regional sessions are expected to examine investment opportunities across Mozambique, North Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa, including Senegal and Mauritania’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project, Nigeria’s LNG and pipeline infrastructure, as well as new gas developments in Congo, Angola and Tanzania.

The summit comes as African gas projects face major investment decisions, with Mozambique providing a significant example of the scale of developments underway on the continent.

Mozambique LNG, led by TotalEnergies, is a $20 billion development projected to produce about 13 million tonnes of LNG annually, while Rovuma LNG, led by ExxonMobil and Eni, is licensed for 18 million tonnes per annum.

Coral South FLNG has been exporting gas since 2022, while the $6 billion to $7 billion Coral North FLNG expansion is expected to double output by 2028.

The programme will include a dedicated Final Investment Decision session examining the factors required to move gas projects towards FID, alongside discussions on financing, LNG infrastructure, gas-to-power, industrialisation and the wider African LNG value chain.

An Africa Energy Ministers’ Forum will also bring together nine African energy ministries to discuss policy, investment and regional cooperation.

Local content and the participation of African businesses in the gas industry will form another part of the discussions.

A dedicated SME and Entrepreneurs session will focus on supplier development, access to finance and opportunities for African businesses to participate in the sector’s expansion.

The conference will also examine how gas development can generate economic benefits beyond exports through local supply chains, enterprise development and wider economic participation.

The opening programme will feature an Energy Leaders’ Dialogue under the theme, “The African Gas Opportunity: Turning Resources into Prosperity.”

The summit will be held under the official patronage of Mozambique President Daniel Chapo and the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Chapo is scheduled to deliver the presidential welcome on the opening day, while the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, is expected to participate in key programme discussions.

The summit is hosted by the Associação de Conteúdo Local de Moçambique (ACLM), with Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), Mozambique’s national hydrocarbons company and government equity partner in LNG projects, and the Instituto Nacional de Petróleo (INP), the sector regulator, serving as strategic partners.

Confirmed participants include the Chairman of ENH, Rudêncio Morais; Chairman of INP, Nazário Bangalane; Chairman of ACLM Mozambique, Dr Elthon Chemane; Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO), Farid Ghezali; CEO of Radial Circle, Ranti Omole; and President and CEO of Tsavo Oilfield Services, Kenya, Eng. Elizabeth Rogo.

A parallel technical track will run alongside the executive conference on the second day, while an international exhibition, opening-day exhibition tour and cocktail reception are also scheduled as part of the three-day programme.
