African Stars Lead Race for FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Award

Africa’s emerging talent is making a powerful statement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with five of the tournament’s brightest young stars featuring prominently in the race for FIFA’s Best Young Player Award after helping their nations reach the knockout stage.

FIFA on Tuesday highlighted 11 outstanding players born on or after 1 January 2005 who have enhanced their credentials for the prestigious award through impressive performances during the tournament, with African players making up almost half of the shortlist.

Yan Diomande and Christ Inao Oulai (Côte d’Ivoire)

Nineteen-year-old RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande has been one of the tournament’s standout performers. He provided an assist in Côte d’Ivoire’s 2-0 victory over Curaçao and became the first player this century to complete 10 successful dribbles and create 10 chances across his opening three World Cup appearances.

Midfielder Christ Inao Oulai has also impressed with a series of influential displays, playing a key role in the Elephants’ progression to the knockout rounds.

Ibrahim Maza (Algeria)

The talented Algerian midfielder featured in all three group-stage matches and was named Superior Player of the Match in his country’s decisive victory over Jordan, which secured Algeria’s place in the Round of 32.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Morocco’s 18-year-old midfield prodigy has demonstrated maturity beyond his years, controlling the tempo of matches as the Atlas Lions advanced through the competition. He also delivered another composed display in Morocco’s Round-of-32 victory over the Netherlands, registering two shots during his 79 minutes on the pitch.

Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal)

Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye made history by becoming the youngest African ever to score at a FIFA World Cup. Aged just 18 years and 143 days, he found the net against France to underline his immense potential.

Global challengers

While African youngsters have enjoyed an outstanding tournament, several players from other nations have also emerged as strong contenders for the award.

Spain’s Lamine Yamal produced the winning assist against Uruguay, while defender Pau Cubarsí has been a commanding presence at the heart of Spain’s defence.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Kerim Alajbegović became the eighth-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history during the group stage.

Brazil winger Rayan, now with Bournemouth, became the youngest Brazilian since Pelé in 1958 to register an assist at the World Cup.

Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi has enjoyed a superb campaign, scoring and providing an assist in a 2-1 victory over Canada to take his tournament tally to three goals.

Canada defender Luc De Fougerolles has also impressed despite his limited senior experience. With only 31 professional appearances before the tournament, he has already earned 16 international caps and has contributed 18 defensive actions and 12 clearances, including a solid cameo in Canada’s Round-of-32 victory over South Africa.

The FIFA Best Young Player Award recognises the tournament’s most outstanding footballer born on or after 1 January 2005. With five African players firmly in contention, the continent has a genuine opportunity to claim one of the World Cup’s most prestigious individual honours.
