At least five people were killed by bandits in Madam Forest, located in the Duguri district of Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, on Saturday.

Governor Bala Mohammed disclosed the incident on Sunday during a peace dialogue held in Nahutan Darazo local government area on Sunday following recent violent clashes between farmers and herders that resulted in injuries

The governor expressed deep concern over the development, lamenting that Hunters who had previously supported security efforts in protecting the state’s forests were now becoming entangled in violent conflicts with farmers.

Governor Bala noted that his administration, in collaboration with security agencies and local vigilante groups, has consistently worked to recover stolen livestock and maintain peace in rural communities.

He commended local hunters for their continued support in securing forested areas, “You have helped us safeguard our forests in Toro, Ningi, Duguri, Yankari, Kirfi, not only in Darazo.”

He said that “Just yesterday bandits killed five of our people in Madam Forest, which borders Taraba, Plateau, and Bauchi-Alkaleri.”

“Why didn’t you assist us there? We are facing serious challenges in our forests. Bauchi has over four million hectares of forests with mountains that are inaccessible; only you can access them.”

Governor Bala attributed the rising tension to the influx of people migrating into Bauchi from other states, coupled with a rapidly growing population, which has increased pressure on land and resources.

In response to the crisis, the Bauchi State Government has inaugurated a high-level committee to investigate recent violent clashes between farmers and herders in the Aliya, Yautare, and Farin Ruwa forest areas of Darazo Local Government Area.

Deputy Governor Muhammad Auwal Jatau, who also serves as chairman, inaugurated the committee at Government House, Bauchi.

He urged the members to carry out their duties with diligence, fairness, and impartiality.

The committee includes representatives from the Bauchi State House of Assembly (Darazo and Sade constituencies), the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lands and Survey, Internal Security, and the Chief Security Officer to the Governor.

Others include the Special Adviser on Housing and Environment, traditional leaders such as the Sarkin Fulanin Sade, and representatives of Fulani and farming communities.

According to the deputy governor, the committee’s terms of reference include identifying the immediate and remote causes of the clashes, compiling a list of affected victims, identifying perpetrators and recommending appropriate sanctions and proposing clear demarcation of disputed farmlands and grazing areas.
