A fire outbreak in the early hours of Friday destroyed at least 50 shops at the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market, sparking fresh concerns over recurring market fires in Kano State.
The blaze reportedly started around 5:40 a.m., according to the chairman of the market’s fire committee, Dauda Haruna Chula, who confirmed the incident to journalists.
Chula said the affected shops were largely occupied by small-scale entrepreneurs engaged in oil production and the recycling of plastics and nylon materials.
“From what we have seen so far, about 50 shops have already been destroyed and the fire is still ongoing,” he said as efforts were being made to contain the inferno.
He added that market authorities promptly alerted emergency responders once the fire broke out.
As of the time of filing this report, the total value of goods lost and any possible casualties had yet to be confirmed.
LEADERSHIP reports that the latest incident comes barely a week after a devastating fire affected more than 1,000 traders at the popular Singer Market, also in Kano.
