The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), led by Dr. Agbo Major, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect subsisting court judgments on the party’s leadership dispute, warning that continued disregard for judicial rulings could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Major said INEC’s continued recognition of a disputed faction within the party runs contrary to the rule of law and threatens institutional credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He insisted that INEC must not place itself above the law, stressing that obedience to court decisions is fundamental to sustaining democracy.
“INEC must not act above the law. Our democracy will collapse if institutions choose who to obey and who to disobey,” he said.
Major noted that despite clear judicial pronouncements, the electoral commission has continued to recognise individuals whose status within the NNPP remains subject to ongoing litigation.
According to him, this position by INEC has created confusion within the party structure and emboldened a faction whose legitimacy is still being contested in court.
He added that the commission’s conduct undermines the principle of judicial authority and the rule of law, both of which are essential to democratic stability.
The NNPP chairman stressed that as a law-abiding political party, it expects INEC to align its actions strictly with existing court rulings rather than political or personal considerations.
He also accused the commission of disregarding due process by engaging with individuals who allegedly lack legal recognition as party leaders.
Major warned that failure by INEC to comply with judicial directives could force the party to consider lawful measures to defend its position.
“If INEC continues to ignore court orders, we will mobilize Nigerians for peaceful protests to protect our democracy,” he said.
