Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flutterwave, Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, has been named the only Nigerian on the 2026 Top 100 Fintech Leaders list published by FinTech Magazine.

Agboola’s inclusion comes as African fintech companies face increasing pressure to move beyond basic payment services and build infrastructure for cross-border transactions, digital banking, financial data and other technology-driven financial services.

FinTech Magazine said its assessment considered factors including organisational scale and market impact, governance and responsibility, professional recognition and industry influence.

The publication said the executives selected for the list reflect different areas of transformation within the global financial services industry, including digital payments, embedded finance, open banking, artificial intelligence and real-time transactions.

Agboola’s recognition comes amid changes in Flutterwave’s business and regulatory operations in Nigeria.

In April, the company announced that it had secured a Nigerian Microfinance Bank licence, expanding the range of financial services it can provide under regulatory oversight. The licence allows the company to hold deposits and provide services including business accounts and payouts.

Flutterwave has also expanded into open banking following its acquisition of Mono, a Nigerian financial-data and account-connectivity platform. The deal brought payment infrastructure and financial-data capabilities under the same corporate structure.

The company has further pursued cross-border payment infrastructure and digital-asset settlement. In June, it announced an investment from Ripple as part of its Series E funding round and plans to integrate Ripple’s payment infrastructure and RLUSD stablecoin into its operations.

It subsequently announced an investment from Circle Ventures and support for USDC settlement, as fintech companies increasingly explore stablecoins and other digital-asset infrastructure for international payments.

Flutterwave said it has processed more than one billion transactions valued at over $50 billion, with operations spanning more than 30 African countries and payment support in more than 50 currencies.

Commenting on the 2026 list, FinTech Magazine chief executive, Glen White, said the selected leaders were contributing to changes in financial services through technology, financial inclusion, product development and customer experience.

White said artificial intelligence, real-time payments and digital-first banking were becoming increasingly important to the future of the financial services industry.

Agboola has previously featured on the TIME100 Next list, while Flutterwave has attracted international attention as one of the African fintech companies seeking to expand payment infrastructure across the continent and international markets.

Meanwhile, his latest inclusion comes as Nigerian fintech companies continue to operate in an increasingly regulated environment, with issues around consumer protection, data governance, digital payments, financial inclusion and cross-border transactions becoming more prominent.
