The Katsina State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has commenced a security awareness campaign across border local government areas aimed at educating residents on cross-border crimes and mobilising communities to support government efforts to curb insecurity in the state and the country at large.
The campaign, which was launched on Monday in Jibia town, will cover Jibia, Kaita, Mashi, Mai’adua, Zango and Baure local government areas.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the state director of NOA, Alhaji Muntari Lawal Tsagem, warned that criminal elements often exploit festive periods to infiltrate the country through informal border routes.
He said such activities contribute significantly to the prevailing security challenges.
According to him, criminals involved in the peddling of illicit drugs, smuggling of illegal arms and other forms of organised crime frequently take advantage of porous borders.
He urged residents of border communities to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or movements to security agencies to enable swift action.
Alhaji Tsagem also called on the people to demonstrate patriotism and loyalty to the nation by supporting security initiatives and respecting national laws.
He stressed the need for parents and guardians to guide their children against drug abuse and other social vices that could expose them to recruitment by criminal gangs.
The NOA director further appealed to community and religious leaders in the border areas to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, particularly with neighbouring communities in the Niger Republic.
He encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding and to discharge their civic duties responsibly.
Alhaji Tsagem commended Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, for what he described as his unwavering commitment to tackling insecurity in the state, urging residents to support the governor’s efforts in restoring peace and making Katsina State safer and more prosperous.
The security awareness campaign is part of NOA’s broader mandate to sensitise citizens and strengthen community participation in addressing national challenges.
