The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake, counterfeit, and substandard drugs, foods, cosmetics, and other products worth N5 billion in Nasarawa State.
Speaking on the development on Thursday, in Lafia, the Agency’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the seizure of the items was a result of increased collaboration with relevant agencies.
She explained that the items were confiscated by officers in Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau states in the course of their routine duties.
“The items for destruction you are seeing here are NAFADC destroys N5bn worth of counterfeit, substandard products in Nasarawa worth over N5bn comprising Food, Drugs, Medical Devices, Detergent, Chemicals”
“Some of these items were intentionally hoarded, concealed, deliberately revalidated after their expiration date, maliciously positioned and displayed for sales by some unscrupulous ‘Merchants of death’ who call themselves Businessmen for sales to unsuspecting Nigerians.
“Some, however, were voluntarily handed over to the Agency by some well-meaning and God-fearing Businessmen and women,” he stated.
She said the exercise was part of NAFDAC’s continuous efforts to safeguard public health by ensuring that unsafe products are permanently removed from circulation.
