President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday inaugurated the Convention Sub-Committee on Programmes and Events of the All Progressives Congress (APC), charging members to work diligently to ensure the success of the party’s national convention.

Speaking during the inauguration of the sub-committee in Abuja, in a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, Jackson Udom, Akpabio described the appointment of the committee members as a privilege and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the party leadership.
“It is a privilege to be recognised by the ruling APC.

The leadership of the party under Professor Nentawe Yilwatda has done well by assembling experienced hands as members of the Programmes and Events Sub-Committee.

“Therefore, we should not have any issues as far as performance is concerned,” he said.

Akpabio reminded members of the importance of their assignment, noting that the committee must ensure proper organisation and coordination of activities during the convention.

“Let us remember why we are here. We must do our job in a way that the stage and venue will not be rowdy.

“We will avoid unnecessary repetition of speeches and take cognisance of the six geopolitical zones to allow sub-national leaders, particularly governors, to showcase what they have done for the people,” he added.

The Senate President also used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment of the National Assembly to national development by supporting the policies and programmes of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to him, the legislature will continue to support the government’s reform agenda aimed at stabilising and growing the nation’s economy.

“The National Assembly will continue to support the agenda of the Tinubu-led administration in its efforts to move the country forward. When President Tinubu assumed office, he met what could be described as a fragile economy.

“He took bold steps, including the harmonisation of the exchange rate and the removal of fuel subsidy, which had long drained the nation’s resources,” Akpabio said.

He also noted that ongoing tax reforms have improved government revenue from the non-oil sector through the National Revenue Service, resulting in increased allocations to sub-national governments.

Akpabio further described the recent wave of defections into the APC as a sign of confidence in the achievements of the Tinubu administration since 2023.

“We are on a trajectory of growth, and the expectation is that this committee will organise a convention that will usher in new national officers of the party and position the APC for another victory for President Tinubu in 2027,” he said.

In his brief remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, corroborated Akpabio’s position on the administration’s economic reforms and other policy initiatives.

He congratulated members of the sub-committee and urged them to work hard to ensure the success of the convention.
