President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday inaugurated the programmes and events sub-committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention, charging members to work diligently to ensure the success of the party’s convention.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, Akpabio said it was a privilege for members to be entrusted with the responsibility by the leadership of the ruling party.

“It is a privilege to be recognised by the ruling APC. The leadership of the party has done well by assembling experienced hands as members of the programmes and events sub-committee,” he said.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the committee to deliver on its mandate, stressing that the composition of the team would ensure effective planning and execution of the convention activities.

According to him, members must remain focused on their responsibilities to ensure that the event is well organised and free from disruptions.

“Let us remember why we are here. We will do our job in a way that the stage and venue will not be rowdy. We will not allow repetition of speeches, and we will take cognisance of the six geopolitical zones to allow the sub-nationals showcase what they have done for their people as governors,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President also used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment of the National Assembly to national development by supporting the policies and programmes of the administration of Bola Tinubu.

He said the legislature would continue to back the President’s economic reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s economy.

“The National Assembly will continue to support the agenda of the President Tinubu-led government in his efforts towards taking the country out of the woods,” Akpabio stated.

According to him, the administration inherited significant economic challenges but has implemented bold reforms including the harmonisation of the foreign exchange system and the removal of fuel subsidy.

“President Tinubu met what can be described as a difficult economy. He had to put on his thinking cap by harmonising the exchange rate and removing fuel subsidy, which was a drain on the economy,” he said.

Akpabio added that ongoing tax reforms have also helped increase national revenue from the non-oil sector, providing more resources for sub-national governments.
