Following a confirmed case of Coronavirus in the neighbouring Cross River State, the Akwa Ibom State government has alerted citizens and residents to be wary of the dreaded ailment, advising them to imbibe the highest level of precautionary measures.
The commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel John and his Information counterpart, Dr Aniekan John Umanah, handed down the advise in Uyo, the state capital, following the resurgence of the disease malady in Calabar, Cross River State, last week.
In a joint statement made available to journalists, the duo warned the residents against unguided movements, urging them to imbibe routine guidelines including keeping safe distance, personal hygiene, frequent hand washing and general environmental cleanliness.
“The government of Akwa Ibom State, through the Ministry of Health, informs the public that recent reports have confirmed the outbreak of COVID-19 in one of our neighbouring states. Given the close geographic, social and economic interactions amongst the people, residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to public health guidelines.
“The state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, following a briefing by the commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Health, has directed the ministry to activate heightened surveillance across all entry points, health facilities and communities.
“He further directed that Disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams be placed on alert to promptly detect and manage any suspected cases.All these have been done .
“Accordingly, citizens are advised to observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, refraining from handshakes and physical greetings, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing occur.
“Healthcare workers are also reminded to maintain a high index of suspicion and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols.
“The Governor further directed the Ministry of Health to strengthen their collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and a coordinated response. The Government hereby reassures residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health.
“The public is encouraged to rely only on verified information from the Ministry of Health and to avoid spreading unverified reports that may cause unnecessary panic.
