In a thrilling display of football action, Akwa United and Godswill Akpabio FC have both secured their places in the preliminary round of the prestigious President Federation Cup after emerging victorious in their respective state semifinal clashes.
Akwa United, widely known as the Promise Keepers, delivered a commanding performance to dismantle Heaven’s Race Academy 4–0 in their semifinal encounter.
The win not only propelled them to the state final but also guaranteed them a spot in the national preliminary rounds of the Federation Cup.
Meanwhile, in a much tighter contest, Godswill Akwasi, a club backed by the former Senate President – came from behind to edge past Palm Syrups in a seven-goal thriller, winning 4–3 to book their first-ever state final appearance.
The two winners will now face off in the state final scheduled for Saturday, 25 April, at the Uyo Township Stadium. For Akwa United, the final offers a chance to redeem themselves after narrowly missing out on promotion in the league this season.
The Promise Keepers have a strong history in the competition, having previously lifted the state Federation Cup trophy twice – in 2015 and 2017.
In stark contrast, Godswill Akpabio FC will be making their maiden appearance in the state final, adding an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the upcoming showdown.
Fans are already anticipating a fierce battle between the experienced former champions and the hungry newcomers.
Both teams now have one eye on the state trophy and the other on the national stage, as qualification for the President Federation Cup preliminary round promises even greater challenges ahead.
