World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the 2026 Madrid Open, citing a lingering wrist injury he picked up during his campaign in Barcelona.
The Spanish tennis star, who also missed last year’s tournament, said the issue is “slightly more serious” than before and that protecting his long-term health must come first—especially with the French Open on the horizon.
Alcaraz shared the news Friday on his official X account.
“There are some things that are incredibly hard to share,” he wrote. “Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row. It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon.”
The 22-year-old began his season flawlessly, winning the Australian Open to complete a Career Grand Slam and adding another trophy in Doha.
Since then, he reached the semifinals in Indian Wells, exited early in Miami, and fell to rival Jannik Sinner in the Monte-Carlo final a match that also decided the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings.
