Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027, citing what it described as the impact of his Renewed Hope Agenda on grassroots governance.

The endorsement formed part of the resolutions reached at ALGON’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

The meeting, chaired by ALGON National President Bello Lawal, had in attendance NEC members from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as three past national presidents and members of the Board of Trustees.

Moving the motion for Tinubu’s endorsement, former ALGON president Alabi Kolade David said the administration’s policies had restored “dignity, fiscal capacity and functional autonomy” to the 774 local government councils. The motion was seconded by Plateau State ALGON chairman and National Publicity Secretary, Anani Mohammed.

In a communiqué signed by Mohammed, ALGON declared “total solidarity” with Tinubu’s administration, noting that continuity would further “deepen grassroots governance” across the country.

In a related development, the NEC suspended three local government chairpersons over alleged impersonation, actions deemed contrary to the association’s interest, and abuse of constitutional provisions.

Those affected are Zakari Iliyasu of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State; Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State; and Abba Shehu Tambuwal of Tambuwal Local Government Council in Sokoto State.

The motion to suspend was moved by Ondo State ALGON chairman, Gbenga Fasua, and seconded by his Kebbi State counterpart, Muhammad Ambursa.

ALGON cautioned ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), state governments, development partners and the public against dealing with the suspended officials, stating that they no longer have the authority to act on behalf of the association.

The council further warned that it would not be held liable for any illegal acts or omissions committed by the affected individuals.

The NEC also passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Lawal, reaffirming loyalty to the national leadership and vowing to resist attempts to create division within the association.
