The United Methodist Church Nigeria Episcopal Area has condemned the continued terrorism, banditry and violent attacks, particularly targeting Christian communities in Nigeria.

The church charged the government to adopt more proactive and decisive measures to protect lives and property of citizens, amid the growing concerns across Nigeria.

This is contained in a communiqué issued to and signed by the committee chairman, Rev. Abainitus Akila Hamman Jr. at the end of the joint session of the five annual conferences of the UMC Nigeria Episcopal Area held in Jalingo, Taraba State yesterday.

It observed that the continued insecurity poses a serious threat to national unity, peace and freedom of worship.

The communique expressed deep concern over the persistent state of insecurity in many parts of the country, noting that the ongoing violence had led to loss of lives, displacement of communities and growing fear among citizens.

The church urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and responsible civic engagement as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

It stressed that to ensure justice for victims of attacks and restore public confidence in the nation’s security architecture, political leaders must uphold justice, transparency and principles of good governance.

The UMC further urged the Christian community to remain prayerful and support families and communities affected by the violence.

On doctrinal matters, the church reaffirmed its commitment to biblical teachings on marriage and family values, and declared support for African bishops of the United Methodist Church in upholding scriptural teachings on human sexuality.

According to the communiqué, marriage remains a sacred union between one man and one woman, rooted in the scripture and African Christian values.

The church also cautioned Christians against division in the face of the trials confronting both the nation and the church.
