The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a condemnation of what it described as the “politicisation” of a civil legal matter, distancing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, from ongoing controversies surrounding a recent wave of arrests linked to alleged defamation on social media.
In a statement signed by Dist. Sen. Usman Adamu Nagwaza CNS (Don Manu), President of the Senate, NANS, and tittled, “Condemnation of Politicization of Legal Dispute and Unjust Drag of Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas’ Name into Unrelated Matter”, the student body expressed concern over the recent developments involving individuals who were being prosecuted over online posts connected to business and land transactions in Zaria and its environs in Kaduna State.
While affirming its support for free speech and the rights of citizens to seek legal redress, NANS warned against the weaponisation of social media and the spread of misinformation.
“False allegations, defamation, and incitement can cause irreparable damage to individuals and institutions,” the association said. “As responsible citizens, we must discourage such acts.”
NANS disclosed that its Fact-Finding Committee thoroughly investigated the matter and found no connection between Speaker Abbas or his wife and the ongoing legal action in court.
“It is categorically clear that Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas has no connection whatsoever with the legal actions taken against the accused persons,” the statement declared.
The association decried what it called a “reckless attempt by certain individuals and groups” to drag the name of the Speaker into a matter he had no involvement in, suggesting the move was politically motivated.
“It is unfortunate that some elements have chosen to exploit this situation to tarnish the reputation of an innocent public servant for cheap political gains,” NANS stated. “The Speaker…does not deserve such malicious insinuations.”
Describing Abbas as a “respected leader” and “a lawmaker of repute,” the student body urged the public to respect the legal process and refrain from spreading unverified claims.
NANS also issued a four-point call to action directed at stakeholders, including the media and civil society. Among the key recommendations were to “stop the spread of misinformation,” “respect the legal process,” and “promote responsible use of social media.”
“Freedom comes with responsibility, and we must all strive to use our platforms constructively, not as tools for character assassination or political vendettas,” the statement read.
NANS reaffirmed its commitment to justice, truth, and the protection of citizens’ rights. It warned that it would continue to monitor developments and would not hesitate to speak out against any further attempts to manipulate public opinion for political ends.
