Alvarez Opens Door To Arsenal Move After Atlético U-turn

Arsenal have received a major boost in their reported pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Alvarez after the Argentine forward softened his stance on a potential move to north London.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Alvarez is no longer completely ruling out a move to Arsenal despite previously favouring a transfer to Barcelona.

Arsenal have maintained a long-standing interest in the 26-year-old, who joined Atlético from Manchester City and has established himself as one of the club’s key players.

Alvarez has scored 49 goals in his first two seasons in Madrid following a successful spell at City, where he won consecutive Premier League titles.

Arsenal initially explored the possibility of signing the Argentina international earlier in the summer, but Atlético were unwilling to entertain his departure.

The Spanish club reportedly rejected interest from Barcelona and also turned down an offer of almost £130 million from Real Madrid, while making it clear that they would not sell Alvarez to a domestic rival.

However, Atlético have since concluded that the situation has become increasingly difficult and are reportedly prepared to sanction a sale — but only to Arsenal.

The major obstacle for the Gunners had been Alvarez’s preference for Barcelona. AS now reports that although the forward still favours a move to the Catalan club, he is no longer dismissing Arsenal’s proposal.

Alvarez is reportedly attracted by Mikel Arteta’s sporting project and could consider joining the Premier League champions if the right conditions are met.

The uncertainty surrounding his future intensified during Atlético’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Sunday, when the striker was jeered by sections of the home crowd.

Fans reportedly chanted for him to leave, while Alvarez headed straight down the tunnel after the final whistle.

Arsenal already have Viktor Gyökeres as their principal striker after signing him for £64 million last summer, but the club are reportedly considering Alvarez as a potentially elite partner and additional attacking option.
