The chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has called on members of the newly inaugurated 10th Legislative Council to place the welfare of residents above political interests and work in harmony with the executive arm to deepen development across the council.
Maikalangu gave the charge on Monday during the inauguration of the 10th AMAC Legislative Assembly at the council’s legislative chamber, shortly after his own inauguration for a new term in office.
The inauguration also witnessed the election of the Assembly’s principal officers, with Hon. Yunana Ishaya emerging as Speaker and Hon. Jonathan Idi of Nyanya Ward elected Deputy Speaker.
Hon. Hamzat Abubakar of Wuse Ward was elected Majority Leader, while Hon. Godwin Iriminya of Karu Ward emerged as Minority Leader.
Speaking after the inauguration, Maikalangu described the mandate entrusted to the councillors as a responsibility to serve the people and address their pressing needs through effective legislation and oversight.
He urged the lawmakers to avoid actions that could hinder developmental projects and programmes designed to improve residents’ lives.
According to him, the success of the council’s administration depends largely on cooperation between the executive and legislative arms.
“I advise you to avoid unnecessary legislative bottlenecks that may frustrate programmes and projects meant to benefit our people. Let us put service above personal interests and reject every form of ethnic and religious division,” he said.
The council chairman stressed that the people of AMAC expect results from their elected representatives and called for a united approach to governance.
He further urged the legislators to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the programme provides a framework for inclusive growth and improved service delivery.
Maikalangu also paid tribute to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, whom he described as a model of transformational leadership and infrastructure development.
He pledged that his administration would continue to emulate the minister’s commitment to delivering impactful projects and people-oriented governance.
Expressing appreciation to residents for renewing his mandate, Maikalangu thanked traditional institutions, community leaders, youth groups, women’s groups, and other stakeholders for their support during the elections.
He assured residents that his administration would remain inclusive and responsive to the needs of all communities within the area council.
“Our victory belongs to every resident of AMAC. We remain committed to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach every ward and that no one is left behind,” he stated.
The chairman also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing members of the 9th Legislative Council, noting that their service helped strengthen grassroots democratic governance.
Earlier, the Director of Administration of AMAC, Hajiya Hajara Abdullahi, welcomed the newly inaugurated lawmakers and commended Maikalangu for fostering a cordial relationship between the council administration and its workforce.
She described the chairman as a leader committed to staff welfare and institutional development.
Addressing the new Assembly leadership, Abdullahi assured them of the council bureaucracy’s full support in carrying out their legislative duties.
She noted that residents were looking up to the new lawmakers to provide quality representation, enact people-centred legislation and contribute meaningfully to grassroots development.
