The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has called for the full implementation of the approved scheme of service for medical laboratory personnel at all government levels.
AMLSN which is the professional body of medical laboratory scientists in the country also wants increased budgetary allocation to the health sector as well as adequate funding of medical laboratory services with a view to making tests affordable, reliable and accessible to the masses.
National president of the association – Dr. Uche Odionyenma made the call at a media briefing in Owerri in commemoration of the 2025 World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day, which had the theme “Biomedical Laboratory Scientist promoting sustainability in clinical diagnosis”.
Speaking on the importance of Biomedical Laboratory Science (BLS), Odionyenma traced the roots of the profession to the establishment of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS), which officially recognized BLS in 1996.
He noted that the International BLS Day, celebrated annually on April 15, was introduced by IFBLS to honor the vital contributions of biomedical laboratory scientists. These professionals play a central role in early disease detection, accurate diagnosis, treatment monitoring, as well as disease surveillance and prevention.
“This is a day to promote and celebrate ourselves as a profession,” Odionyenma stated, “and to raise public awareness about the essential role biomedical laboratory scientists play in delivering quality healthcare.”
The AMLSN boss hailed President Bola Tinubu for his reform agenda, particularly in the health sector. He insisted on the full implementation of the National Health Act 2014, liberalizing the headship, and restructuring the Federal Ministry of Health with a view to appointing credible, professional, unbiased, experienced health administrators.
