World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, made a strong start to her 2026 campaign, finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica.

Amusan, widely known for her exploits in the hurdles, showed her versatility on the track by clocking a season’s best time of 23.25 seconds.

Her performance was enough to secure a second-place finish behind Jamaican sprint icon Elaine Thompson-Herah, who won the race in 22.61 seconds. Another Jamaican, Ackera Nugent, placed third with a time of 23.35 seconds in a competitive field.

The outing marks an encouraging start to the season for Amusan, who continues to build form ahead of major international competitions. It was also her first race since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she was Nigeria’s sole medallist, claiming silver.

One of the events she has been confirmed for this season is the Prefontaine Classic, where she will return to her specialty, the 100m hurdles, in Eugene on July 4.

The event, part of the Diamond League series, will take place at Hayward Field and is expected to feature one of the strongest fields in the discipline this season.

Amusan, who holds the world record of 12.12 seconds, is set to compete against reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed significant success in Eugene in the past, winning her first world title and setting the current world record at the venue during the 2022 World Championships. She later returned to claim the Diamond League final title there in 2023.

Amusan has also established herself as one of the most dominant athletes in the event over the past decade, winning the Diamond League final for three consecutive seasons between 2021 and 2023.
