Former Senate President and Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Celebrated his birthday with the vulnerable at the Abuja Children’s Home.
While speaking at the occasion, he said that the 64th birthday is not for celebration but to mark it with the vulnerable to show them love, according to the Book of John, chapter three, verse eight, highlighting the spirit of love and care for others, incredibly the less privileged and the vulnerable.
Anyim said, “The point we want to make at 64 is simply to interpret this to be my life and the life of anybody. As long as you trust God, your birth circumstances or place may not matter, no matter your background.”
“As long as the hand of God is in your life, the sky will be your limit. Several people have asked me how they will support what we are doing. How will they contribute to this event? We were careful about that.
We do not want to raise funds here. We do not want to ask anybody to contribute to what we are doing, but we want to invest in the lives of these children.”
“We want those who will join us to invest in their lives. In essence, what we want is that at the end of this event, we want to know how many people will choose the number of children or a single child to sponsor from where they are now to university.”
“By taking responsibility to see them through school, it may be from primary, nursery or secondary to the university, which will be documented and made available for the individuals to support.”
“They are our future. If they are well-cared for and given opportunities like any other child, society will be better for us.
Also, the son of former Senate President Chisom Anyim, who was at the event to support his father, said, “I’m here to be with my dad to celebrate his 64th birthday. I am inspired by how he’s impacting this orphanage by investing in the children’s future.”
“Apart from marking his birthday at the orphanage. He does it regularly by investing in the future of these children, simply because he knows that the children are the future of tomorrow, and they can be leaders of tomorrow.”
For his part, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume said that the former Senate president believes in friendship and brotherhood and that when he commits, he carries it out.
“Today is a very special day. He is 64; we are all here to wish him well and learn about his work. Everyone that has come here today must go home with this lesson: the more we give, the more we get, and the more we put smiles into people’s faces, the more God puts smiles in our faces,” he said.
Also, the former minister for information, Labaran Maku, stressed philanthropism as a vital role that the high and mighty in society must continue to play.
He said, “We must continue to lend a helping hand to the poor. But what the poor need most is leadership and policies that will reach them and transform their lives where they are.”
“There are many orphans in Nigeria now. Even those who are here are privileged. Some have parents but can no longer respond to their needs due to the hunger in the land, not just for orphans but also even for people who are living in regular families. Let our country work for those below.”
“If you don’t know anybody now, you cannot go to Nigerian customs if you don’t have a big man up; nothing will take you to customs today because to go up now, you must have a big man to be in the customs. You must have a big man to join the civil service. You must have a big man to enter any serious service in Nigeria today.”
“If this situation were like this, some of us would never have known because our parents never knew anybody outside the village. So please let us who happen to be those who will make the policies for the country when we come to a place like this let us use the privileged position that God gives us in service in government to ensure that we enact policies and rules that will favour every child, whether they have parents or not.”
“That is how we will be able to grow a country that will develop citizens who have the confidence to transform our nation.”
