The All Progressive Congress (APC) Support Groups have urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate an investigation into the detention of minors by security agencies during the anti-government protests.

During a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the group’s director-general, Prof. Kailani Muhammed, highlighted concerns over the actions of security personnel which he said had damaged Nigeria’s reputation internationally.

“We earnestly request that the president looks into the actions of security agencies which have demonstrated excessive force,” he stated.

He pointed out that both the Nigerian constitution and international laws protect minors from prosecution for offenses such as treason, adding, “The police are aware of these protections, and those responsible should be held accountable to prevent future incidents.”

Muhammed also raised concerns regarding the lack of government appointments for the APC Support Groups which played a significant role in Tinubu’s presidential campaign. He expressed disappointment that despite earlier assurances from the president, the groups had been excluded from federal appointments since Tinubu took office in May 2023.

“It is disheartening that our numerous written and verbal requests have gone unanswered,” he said. He further noted the irony of Tinubu distancing himself from those who worked diligently for his success, criticising the president for surrounding himself with those he referred to as “Lagos boys,” individuals who were not involved in the campaign but now hold important advisory positions.

“This is surprising, considering that the ‘Jagaban’ we have known has always kept his promises,” he added. Tinubu’s office has not responded to the allegations or their appeal for an inquiry into the detention of minors.
