APC Trying To Strangle Opposition, Says Prof Bugaje

The chairman of the national convention planning committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof Usman Bugaje, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to suppress opposition parties and shrink the nation’s democratic space.

Speaking during the 2026 SDP national convention held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, in Bauchi yesterday, Prof Bugaje described efforts to weaken opposition politics as “One of the most despicable offences” in a democracy.

He alleged that some individuals within the ruling party, the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were aiding actions aimed at undermining political competition.

According to him, history has shown that attempts to silence opposition and manipulate democratic institutions never end well. He recalled the era of late military ruler Sani Abacha, saying despite the use of state power and intimidation, democracy eventually prevailed.

“God is watching, Nigerians are watching and history is recording every action,” he said, warning that those undermining democracy would face consequences.

Bugaje said the theme of the convention and presidential primaries, ‘Building a People’s Coalition to Secure Our Homeland and Defeat Poverty,’ reflects the role political parties play in offering citizens alternatives when governments fail to guarantee security and welfare.

He said the SDP, as a social democratic party, is well positioned to provide Nigerians with credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges.

“The alternative the SDP is providing is not only in its philosophy, but also in the character and competence of its candidates,” he stated.

Bugaje argued that while other political parties continue to field candidates linked to Nigeria’s longstanding problems, the SDP is presenting “Fresh, energetic and competent” individuals motivated by a desire to improve the lives of citizens.

He further criticised what he described as the politicisation of national institutions, alleging that bodies such as the judiciary and INEC were increasingly being manipulated by selfish politicians.

The SDP chieftain admitted that the party may not possess the financial strength or influence associated with larger political parties, but insisted that such “big men and deep pockets” were responsible for Nigeria’s current difficulties.

“Our strength lies in ideas, courage, and conviction,” he said, adding that the party is reaching out to patriotic Nigerians, professionals, and people of integrity willing to rescue the country from political decay.

He said that meaningful change would require sacrifice, courage, perseverance and faith in God.
